Why is the number of stomata greater on the lower surface of a leaf?

All surfaces of the leaf have some amount of stomata for regulating gas exchange for photosynthesis. However, the lower epidermis (the underside of the leaf) has more, because it is more often in the shade and so it is cooler, which means evaporation won't take place as much. Evaporation would mean the plant loses water, vital for life.

explanation:
Stomata helps in transpiration along with gaseous exchange. Thus, if there are more stomata on upper leaf surface it will increase the transpiration rate but if the stomata is placed in the lower surface it will be less exposed to sunlight thus there will be less transpiration .Thus, there are more stomata on lower epidermis than on upeer epidermis .
