The acidic condition in stomach is required so that the acid is able to kill the germs and bacteria if any of it gets ingested by the food. The pH of stomach acid is 2 which is highly acidic which can corrode even the stomach lining. To protect the stomach lining, the inner surface of the stomach is covered with mucus layer.
