It is selectively permeable because it allows only certain materials to pass through it. It means only needed materials are allowed to pass through

Plasma Membrane is known as Selectively Permeable Membrane.
It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
Plasma Membrane allows the entry of only some substances.
Also , on the other hand , it prevents the entry / movement of some other substances
Hence , Plasma Membrane is known as Selectively Permeable Membrane.
