Why is the president known as nominal head of the state?

According to Indian constitution the President shall act only according to the aid and advice of the council of ministers. That is he cannot do anything at his own volition. Therefore the President of India is only a nominal head. What is to be done for the country is decided by the Council of Ministers subject to approval of the Parliament

Because he can't do anything in his own volition and that's why the president is known as nominal head of the state.
