The opposition party behaves as an alternative government.
Their role is to challenge the existing government by opposing against government actions, policies, new plans etc.
That is why through such challenges they bring new hurdles for the ruling party, and helps the common man of the country get a better government in action, as the ruling party gets compelled to perform better and better under the pressure and challenges.
