The Muslim invaders of India after Mahmud of Ghazni are  historically referred to as mamluk (meaning “owned” in Arabic) because these men, mostly Turks, had been sold as children. From the ninth century A.D, the mamluks formed a major part of Muslim armies. Even though they were slaves, the mamluks were often considered by their masters to be better than their own sons. Muhammad Ghori, when asked about his lack of male offspring, had once famously replied, "Have I not thousands of children in my Turkish slaves?”

After his death in 1206, in the absence of an heir, Muhammad Ghori’s dominions were divided among his mamluk generals. Of them, four rose to high command: Yildoz in the Afghan mountains, Kubacha on the Indus, Bakhtiyar in Bengal, and Aibak at Delhi. Qutb ud-Din Aibak declared himself Emperor of India and became founder of the Slave Dynasty.
