The smooth endoplasmic reticulum or smooth ER is a membranous organelle which is found in both eukaryotic animal and plant cells. An organelle is a part within a cell which has a particular function. The smooth ER is a part of endomembrane system of the endoplasmic reticulum. Its primary function is to create cellular products like hormones and lipids. It also administers these hormones and lipids throughout the cell and in the organism. Its other functions include detoxification of toxins and regulation and release of calcium ions. Hence smooth endoplasmic reticulum is important.
