Why is the surface area of a cylinder less than a rectangular prism with the same volume?

If you take two prisms at random that have the same volume, it's very likely that they don't have the same surface area. Two of the typical problems given in calculus are to find the box with the minimum surface area for a given volume and to find the box with the largest volume having a given surface area.
