there are no molecules in sodium chloride, just large clusters of Na+and Cl- ions. For this reason, the term “molecular mass” is not appropriate for sodium chloride. We base the formula of an ionic compound on a hypothetical entity called a formula unit.

because it is not a molecule. it is a compound. many compounds form molecules. so compound mass is correct term for this
