thick copper strip is used in a lightning conductor because it conducts more current or lightning from the tremendous thunder. which leads to the the electricity to pass through the ground.

if there is a thin strip kept the strip may break due to high voltage.

Using copper wire allows the lightning to pass through it easily.

Also, we know that Cu is a good conductor of heat and electricity so, we can prefer to use it.
