Iodine is necessary for the thyroid gland to make Thyroxine hormone. This hormone regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and also regulates the balance of growth.

The deficiency of Iodine in your daily diet causes production of less thyroxine hormone and it causes a disease called goitre. The symptoms of disease includes swollen of neck due of enlargement of thyroid gland in neck. So, people are then advised to take iodised salt for cooking purpose to prevent themselves from goitre disease. This can explained as, that Iodised salt contains appropriate amount of iodine compounds such as potassium iodide.Iodised salt can provide all the iodine needed by the thyroid gland to make sufficient thyroxine hormone and thus prevent us from Goitre disease.
