why is the valency of chlorine is 1 only ,why it can't be 2or 3?Please give possible reasons.

The number of valence electrons in the outermost shell of chlorine is 7 . So,the valency of chlorine is 1 .

The number of electrons in the outermost shell of a chlorine atom is 7. The number of electrons needed for it to attain stability is 8-7=1,since an atom becomes stable when there are 8 electrons in its outermost shell. Hence the valency of chlorine is 1.
