air is less denser atomically that steel therefore it has less velocity of sound than steel

Velocity of sound is less in air than in steel because sound requires a medium to travel and air and steel both are it's medium but in air the molecules are far apart and have large intermolecular spaces because air is gaseous state of matter but steel has compacked molecules and have no intermolecular spaces between them because they are solid in state.
So as the molecules are nearer in steel the energy of sound is passed down faster and has greater velocity whereas in air molecules are far apart and sound energy transfers slowly.
Hope it helps
