The pollution of the Tungabhadra River has impacted one million people in the Sub-Basin as most of the village settlements there use the river for drinking, bathing, irrigation, fishing & cattle water purposes. Earlier water for these purposes were obtained through "an ancient tank system"
Explanation:
- Tungabhadra is one of the most polluted rivers in the nation. Industrial pollution has caused severe impairment to the Tungabhadra River. Mining industries, one of the major polluters, on the banks of the river generate huge amounts of effluents that flows into the river, thereby polluting the water.
- Industrial effluents from Poly-fibres & Rayon and Silk Manufacturers industries into the river daily without treating these effluents properly before discharging them into the river, has led to these effluents containing toxic substances such as sodium sulphate, sodium hydroxide, mercury, zinc, & carbon di sulphate mixing with water and heavily contaminating it.
