The West Indies cricket team won its first test against England in 1950. This win gave a sense of self respect to the native population in these islands because it brought them at par with the Englishmen in terms of expertise in the game.

Secondly, it also furthered the efforts of the Britain to unify the several dominions under the aegis of West Indies.
