The West Indies cricket team won its first test against England in 1950. This win gave a sense of self respect to the native population in these islands because it brought them at par with the Englishmen in terms of expertise in the game.
However, this was not a win in the complete sense because a white player and not a black one captained the team. Secondly, it also furthered the efforts of the Britain to unify the several dominions under the aegis of West Indies. They gave the team the name of West Indies even before the unification of these dominions, and so in a sense, the team was playing with an identity given to them by the British.
