The split alows a freedom of movement inside the plug socket. It allows you to insert the plug in a smaller hole & ensures tight contact or prevents loose contact

The pins in a 3 pin plug are splitted at the ends so that they provide a spring action which would help them to fit into the sockets nicely and tightly.
