The emission of water vapor from the leaves of plants is called transpiration. It is essential for the movement of water and minerals from the root to the healthy parts of the plant. But excess transpiration may result in drying up of the leaves or wilting and loss of soil water. Hence it is termed as a necessary evil.

Transpiration is the process in which there is a loss of water in the form of water vapour from the stomatal openings. Due to the process of transpiration, there is pressure on the plant for the absorption of water. Therefore, the process of transpiration is called a necessary evil.
