Importance of Variation
Organisms occupy well-defined places or niches in the ecosystem, using their ability to reproduce.
Those organisms which have the same body design occupies the same niche or place in the ecosystem.
The population tends to wipe out completely if a niche suitable for organisms of a particular population is drastically changed.
But, if variation occur in few individuals of these population, there would be chances of some individuals, e.g. in a population of bacteria living in temperate water. If the temperature increases due to the global warming, most of the bacteria would die. But, the variants which are resistant to heat would survive and grow further. Thus, it shows that variations in a population are important for the survival of a species.
