Virus require various enzymes and other metabolic substances for their proper functioning.
For example, it has Reverse Transcriptase enzyme responsible for formation of cDNA from RNA. This enzyme is activated inside the host cell.
Another example:
Virus require Integrase enzyme for integration of viral DNA with host DNA. Such enzymes are activated inside the host cells.
It also requires membrane proteins and lipids for proliferation . It is obtained from Macrophages and T4 cells.
That's why, when virus cells are outside hosts, they can't proliferate and hence remain inactive ( a form of being dead).
