Water is used as a coolant in automobiles radiators because it has high specific heat capacity. So, it absorbs a large amount of heat for a degree rise in temperature.

Answer:
Water itself has a very high specific heat capacity and does a wonderful job of transfering heat to the surrounding - aka radiator. The problem is its boiling point is relatively low at 212F but the freezing point is 32F and since water expands as it freezes, damages to the cooling system can occur.
