Western coastal plains are important to us because apart from the staple diet, rice, a large number of other crops are grown here.

Coconut tree also grows along the coast. There are primarily five reason for their importance.

i. There are many big and small ports along the western coastal area that is important for trading and business. They also play a very important role for the growth of international trade.

ii. There are some places along the coast that have mineral oil deposits.

iii. The sands which are there along the Kerala coast have huge reserves of monazite, that is primarily used for nuclear power production.

iv. The low-lying marshy areas of Gujarat are popular for the production of common salt.

v. Fishing is also done by people residing in coastal regions and is a source of livelihood for them.
