The structure of the wool fiber causes thousands of tiny air pockets to form in wool fabric. In cold weather these trap body heat like a thick blanket does.
However, those same air pockets mean that air can flow through the fabric, allowing the body to cool itself through the evaporation of sweat. So a thin wool can be quite comfortable in summertime. It also can absorb moisture without feeling wet against your skin, so it isn’t clammy when you sweat.

Wool is used in making garments used in winter because wool is bad conductor of heat; it insulates the body from the surrounding. And the air which is trapped in between the wool fibers; prevents the flow of heat from our body to the cool surrounding.
