Why is Y axis vertical and X axis horizontal?

X axis and Y axis are just names given to the axis so it is not necessary to write Y = vertical and X = horizontal

y axis is vertical because in y axis upper side positive no.and downside negative.
x axis is horizontal because in 1st coloumn positive no.and in 2nd coloumn negatuvi no.
