Zener diode always used in reverse bias condition because..
A reverse biased ,zener diode exhibits controlled the breakdown & allows current to keep voltage across zener diode close to the zener breakdown voltage.
For example, diode with zener breakdown voltage of 3.2V exhibits the voltage drop of very nearly 3.2 across wide range of reverse current.
