why is zinc electroplated on iron?

Zinc is electroplated on iron because it prevents the metal from corrosion.

It is a well known fact that iron is vulnerable to rusting when it comes in contact with moisture.

Coating of zinc through electroplating blocks the reaction from happening, therefore the iron rod can be placed anywhere and it would not corrode.
