Why isn't CH4 (Mithun) an acid ?​

ch4 is methane not methun

REASON

It depends on how u look at it.

Anything which produces H+ ions in water is called acidn

HA → H+ + A-

If the products ie A- is stable then the reaction goes ahead and H+ concentration is increased is a considerable amount and then it behaves as an acid.

But when we look at methane CH3 - formed is not very stable and hence the reaction doesnt go ahead and H+ concentration is very low..

But all this occurs only in aqueous medium. So i would say that methane dissociates in water but the concentration of H+ produced is so low that we can assume that no dissociation occurs at all..

And also even if some CH4 dissociates to give CH3- .. The ion reacts with water immediately to produce methane as it is very basic in nature.
