Sewage contains various contaminants including disease-causing bacteria and other microbes. If this contaminated water is used for drinking, then it can cause diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, etc. which may lead to death. That is why it is harmful to discharge untreated sewage into rivers or seas.

Answer:

Sewage is the liquid waste i.e wastewater released by our daily activities from various sources like homes, office, Industries, hospitals, agriculture fields and other place. It also includes rainwater that run down the street during a heavy rain.

It is harmful to discharge untreated sewage into rivers or seas because sewage is a complex mixture having dissolved and suspended impurities. It contains suspended solid, organic and inorganic impurities, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, saprophytes and disease causing bacteria and microbes. If the sewage is released in untreated form into rivers or seas, it will contaminate the river and seawater causing both water and soil pollution. It will have a fatal outcome on all forms of life including us and our environment.
