Many of the discoveries in the field of chemistry happened accidentally. The discovery of the element iodine was one such incident.
It happened when a French chemist named Bernard Courtois was in his laboratory. He noticed purple vapours rising from kelp ashes that he had acidified with sulphuric acid, and heated.
The vapours condensed on a cold surface to form shiny dark crystals. These crystals were later proved to be an element that was iodine. The word iodine was after the Greek word of violet, iodes.
