The bag exerts a force on you due to its weight and in turn you feel a pressure. Pressure(P)=Force divided by unit area. That is, it is inversely proportional to the surface area of contact. If the strips are thin, all the pressure would be concentrated on one point which may cause us discomfort. So, the strips are wider as the pressure is distributed and easier to lift.
