It was just a statement which was murmured by John out of some random calculation which he was making in his mind.
The author already mentions in the story that after leaving the work, his mind was very much churning.
This shows that he was busy with calculations that he was making in his mind.
So, he randomly recalled the calculation he was doing in his mind and then murmured the statement.
