Actually both were very powerful but when Karna took his education from bhagwan parshuram, he lied that he is a brahmin and when his teacher came to know that he was not brahmin he cursed Karna that at the time when he would be in the need of his education and talent of archery he will forget everything. So actually, he was not able to have a perfect competitive match with Arjun....
also because he was with evil he had to die
