Khadi fabric is made out of a yarn that has been handspun on the desi charkha. Like most of the practices of our culture, hand spinning, too, has a great importance in the ecological and economical balance of the country. Our indigenous varieties of cotton are suited for hand spinning; they are not the best choice when it comes to machines. This is one of the reasons for the fame of Egyptian cotton. In India, however, we have many varieties of cotton, all suited for spinning by hand, forming for a self-dependent village economy. These cottons can be rainfed, grown along with other crops and need no special inputs by the farmer.
