why laterite soil is not as fertile as alluvial soil

Such transported soils are known as Lowland Laterites. Laterite soil does not retain moisture and hence is not fertile. It suits only special crops like Tapioca, Cashewnuts, etc.It is acidic in nature as alkalis are leached. Laterite soils are found on the highland areas of the plateau.
