For the following reasons, lead acetate and cotton plug are used in arsenic limit tests:

  • The arsenic limit test detects the quantity of arsenic in a sample by converting arsenic to arsine gas, which may be detected on mercuric chloride paper.
  • Hydrogen sulfide, or H₂S gas, is produced as a contaminant during the reduction of arsenic to its gaseous form.
  • Because hydrogen sulfide gas is hazardous to the environment, it should not be allowed to escape.
  • As a result, during the limit test, a cotton plug is employed to catch this gas.
  • To detect the presence of H₂S gas, the cotton plug is pretreated with lead acetate.
  • Hence In the limit test for arsenic, lead acetate impregnated with cotton is employed.
