Copper vessels are tarnished due to the layer of oxide formed on the surface. ... When we rub it on the surface of tarnished vessel, basiccopper oxide reacts with acidic lemonto form salt, which is then washed away while cleaning the vessel with water.

Hey mate, here is your answer

In tarnished copper vessels, a layer is formed on them which is basic in nature. Since lemon contains acid, it is used to clean tarnished copper vessels.
