why liquids generally have lower density than solids

As compared to solids liquids have loosely packed particles which enable them to take the shape of any container they occupy. Similarly the density of liquid is determined by the way they are packed. This is the reason that liquids have lower density than solids

Here's the answer !!

Properties of Liquids are :

1. Less Inter molecular force of attraction

2. More inter molecular spaces ( Compared to solids )

3. Less rigidity and hardness.

Due to these properties Liquids remain as fluids by nature. Since they have spaces between them, their mass and volume comes to a smaller quantity compared to solids.

Hence solids are more denser than liquids.

Exception : Ice is a solid but it floats on water. This is because Ice has more inter molecular spaces between it's atoms. But water has comparatively less than ice.

Hence Ice floats on water with low density.
