In 1914, 90,000 Indian soldiers from the Indian Army were sent to the front in northern France and Belgium. The letters they wrote - or rather have written - to their family in India will be published in part by British military censorship. In what context was a British Expeditionary Force sent to France? What role did these soldiers play during the conflict? And what perception could they have of France and the French? On this last point, the study of their correspondence, the only remaining trace of a passage that has sometimes lasted four years, brings exciting insights.

The current composition and structure of Indian Army is as follows:
The Indian Armed Forces are the "military forces" of the "Republic of India"
It is the second largest military force in the world having 1.4 million active personnel.
The "president of India" is the "supreme commander" of the "Indian Army" which is under the "Department of Ministry of Defence" "(MoD)". It is headed by the "chief of Army staff" who is also a four star general.
There are two officers who are conferred with the "rank of the Marshall" which is a position of "great honour".
Indian Navy, Indian Army and the Indian Air Force are its three "professional uniformed services".
It also has the support of "Indian Coast Guard" and "other paramilitary organisations" (which are all under the control of the Ministry of Home Affairs).
