it was Kaikeyi who asked Rama to leave for forest at behest of her servant manthara. So ordinarily you will find she was the reason ,but that is not true at all Kaikeyi was innocent she always loved Ram like his own son but she was held by destiny to command Rama to forest.

Lord Rama went to forest to fulfill his father's wish.
The second wife of dashrath (Rama's Father) was kaikeyi. .Once ,his father gave him his words and then kaikeyi could ask dashrath to fulfill her two wishes.
The wishes asked by kaikeyi were :
1)Send Rama to the forest
2)Give the rule in Bharat 's hand.
To complete the words of his father ,Rama went to forest because at that time the words of a king were more important than anything in the world.
