★ That's because the materials to be digested are taken into the lysosome themselves and after digestion,

what is left of it is extruded out of the cell,

after this purging what remains of the lysosome? nothing.

So, it has killed itself along, thus committing suicide.

★ In contrast to the above, if it had poured the degrading enzymes into a vacuole, it would have been called the Murder organelle of the cell!

why lysosomes called as the suicidal bags?

  • If the cell is damaged, the lysosomes undergo autolysis and burst open.
  • This results in the release of those hydrolytic enzymes.
  • The released enzymes then digest their own cell and ultimately the cell dies.

Hence, they are called as suicidal bags of the cells.
