why magnesium ribbon be cleaned before burning in air...plzz help friends​

They are cleaned to give friction to the ribbon to give heat energy for the burning

Magnesium ribbon is cleaned with sand paper before burning in air so that the the layer of magnesium oxide [when magnesium ribbon reacts with oxygen] could be removed before conducting experiment.
