Magnessium ribbon is cleaned before burning in air because Magnessium is hilghly reactive and when it is exposed to the air it has a coating of a white layer of magnessium oxide on it's surface. It is formed by the slow reaction of moist air on it. This hinders the burning of magnessium. If magnessium ribbon will not be cleaned then the reaction will not take properly.
