Why magnesium ribbon is rubbed with sand paper before burning?

Explanation:

The magnesium ribbon which we use usually has a coating of magnesium oxide on its surface which is formed by slow action of air on it. so, before burning in air, the magnesium ribbon is cleaned by rubbing with a sand paper, This is done to remove the protective layer of magnesium oxide from the surface of magnesium ribbon.

Additional information :-

When magnesium burns in air, it combines with the oxygen of air to form magnesium oxide.

Chemical equation :-

  • 2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO
  • This is the example of combination reaction.
  • Magnesium oxide are basic in nature.

magnesium ribbon has a slow coating of protective magnesium oxide .before it burnt it rubbed against sand paper becz to remove the procet layer it rubbed .
