Why magnetic lines of force travel from north to south?

Magnetic field line depict the direction of magnetic field at any given point. It is easy to draw these field lines by using a magnet and compass .If we place a bar magnet on the piece of paper and put a compass near one end of it and start moving it , we can trace a magnetic field lines . We commonly use a convention that this lines emanate from north pole to the magnet and complete a loop and enter a south pool.
Thus, it is only convention by which we decided to use the direction for these lines , just to insure the everybody is using the same direction .The actual direction may be different.
