Why magnetising current of transformer is small?

the transformer works on the principle of mutual induction and if there is no core between the two coils then magnetic flux between the coil will be in multidirectional but due to presence of core most of the magnetic flux lines gets unidirectonal in the direction of core attached to secondary coil. So if their is no core between the coils magnetising current will be small
