When the protesters set fire at the Chauri Chaura police station and it caused the death of 21 policemen, Gandhi ji was hurt as he was against violence. So, he called off the movement.

Gandhi felt that te movement was turning violent after the chauri chaura incident where a police station was burned by the mob killing 22 policemen.
