Why malayalam which is a recent language given classical language status?

Among the Dravidian languages, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu received classical language status before Malayalam, though Malayalam happens to be the oldest. For being conferred with a classical status, the Government of India stipulates certain conditions/criteria. The language has to be more than 1500 years old.
