Why mechanical advantage of pliers is more than one whereas of a pair of scissors less than one?

A pair of scissors must have its MA less than 1, as it doesn't multiply force, instead its blades must cut the material fast.

A pair of pliers must have its MA more than 1, as it needs to multiply force, so that a nail can be pulled out by applying relatively less force (just an example).

Answer:

When we squeeze the handles of the pliers, the force that the pliers apply to whatever they grip is greater than the force we apply. In simplest terms, the mechanical advantage is the force applied by the pliers divided by the force we apply to the pliers.
