Why mercury is not fallen when the thermometer is inverted?

A thermometer tube interior cross-section is quite small … usually about 1/8 inch or less (the curvature of the glass has a magnifying effect, making the mercury column seem bigger than it actually is). Mercury does not react or even adhere (“cling”) to glass. The mercury column holds itself together by surface tension. However, if the glass tube is wide enough that the weight of the mercury is greater than the retaining effect of the surface tension, then the mercury will flow downwards abruptly. And remember the old-style hospital thermometers: it took several very brisk shakes of the inverted thermometer to force the very thin column of mercury back down into the “bulb”reservoir.
