Why metallic oxides are called basic oxides and non metallic oxides are called acidic oxdies?

Metal oxides are basic oxides because when they are kept in acid, neutralization rxn take place. which shows that it is basic in nature.

Same happens with non metallic oxides. when they are kept in base, Neutralization reaction take place. which shows that these are acidic in nature.
