Why metals are usually transparent due to band gap

They are not really “transparent”, thick enough layer of metal will stop even high energy gamma rays. ... The reason high energy electromagnetic radiation is more penetrating is, that such high energy photons “see” atoms as a bunch of individual electrons and a nucleus.
